The Base
The toon helmet started off with one of the Hybrids as a base.
Pretty simple, right?
Hack and Slash
The first thing I did was cut out the entire back of the helmet.
The chop out sections of the face to square off the cheeks. I also pushed the sides out to flare it out more. I should have learned from the Fett... the flare is an illusion! I spent much time later reverting these changes.
Not really hacking or slashing, but I did shorten the indented area at the temples quite a bit:
The Lower Edge
I spent a long time, a lot of Bondo and a lot of epoxy putty to build out the flared lower lip of the helmet. Another of my failings with v1: The chin juts out too far and the angle of the lip is all wrong. Time and more reference does wonders.
Also shown here is the much skinnier fin.
The Back Reborn
Rebuilding the back was "fun".
I used some sheet plastic to form a base, then a LOT of Bondo. A base that is too wide, unfortunately.
Then build up the details with more sheet plastic:
Shaping Up
Not shown: I carved out the indented area in the center with a Dremel and added the raised circle using a PVC pipe and a bunch more Bondo. I also extended the length of the fin by about 1/2" using epoxy putty. The ear details are added just like in the Hybrid: washers and Bondo. The vent slots were carved with the Dremel.
Now it's starting to look like a helmet!
Lots of sanding and priming and filling later, we get to something moldworthy:
And then a nice pull from said mold:
Rex V2
Painted up and ready to troop! Huge improvement over the Hybrid!
