Clone Trooper Helmets

This all started with me wanting to make a Rex helmet, but not having a quick and cheap way to get a kit. I figured that if it was going to take a month or two for a kit to arrive, I might as well spend that time making my own.

As with most of my projects, the Rex helmet spawned a variety of other things. I've had 4 different Rex helmets to date, and have created 5 unique helmet sculpts as I went. I've also branched into accessories for other clones now.

The point of origin is a Hasbro voice changer helmet. No, really :)

Let's walk through the versions. Each link finishes up with a Rex style helmet.

The Hybrid was accurate to neither the live action nor CGI film. It was a composite of the two, based on what was easy to do with the Hasbro. In short, it was a starter helmet. The hardest work all happened at this level though: fixing the visor, filling seams, etc...
The Toon v1 was a derivative of the Hybrid. This was my first pass at the animated style. At this point the movie was fresh in the theaters, and reference material was limited.
The Toon v2 is a derivative of the Toon v1. Taking advantage of the now abundant reference, I fixed a number of errors in the original. This one is narrower, has a less protruding chin, and a more accurate fin.
Toon v3 isn't even really a new version. I was making a new mold, so I did some additional tweaking. It's slightly taller... about 1/4". The cheeks are about 1/8" deeper. I think that's about it. Our Cody helmet is from the v3 mold.
The AotC was also a derivative of the Hybrid, made more as a proof of concept than anything else. Since I don't have an AotC suit, this helmet is a display piece only. I was surprised at how good it looks, considering that it started life as a kid's toy!
There is also now a version 4 of the Animated helmet. The [v4] is a pretty big overhaul. A ton of symmetry issues were fixed, the back was reconstructed, the cheeks reshaped, the brow trim raised, and the underside completely rebuilt.

I've also started working on the accessories needed to make up some of the other characters:

Clone Commander Visor. My first non-Rex addon, the visor seen on Cody and Fox's helmets. For Cody's helmet light I used a book light from microcenter.

Last, but certainly not least, check out the all new Legion Gallery where you can see pictures of what our friends in the 501st and Rebel Legion have done with the kits we've given them.
