The painting of this helmet came in time with a demonstration on weathering I was doing at the Boston Museum of Science. So, I decided to live dangerously and peel off the latex live on stage!
The photos here are post cleanup... the peeling of the latex is pretty messy, and I really didn't want to get my camera near the stray flakes of paint.
Here is a similar shot to one of the masking photos I took earlier:
A closeup of the visor area. I've done some razor scratches on here, and some minor topical weathering with a fine point silver paint marker (Berol Prismacolor). The small silver dots are topical since marks that tiny don't really do so well with the masking fluid:
Masked off area for the kill marks. I use electrical tape rather than masking tape... I find it it less likely to pull up the paint underneath it. Definitely wait a couple of days after you paint to try to mask it!
Here you can see the back of the helmet and the rest of the stripe mask:
Stripes painted on. They are really bright now, but once the layers of mist / wash go down they should tone down nicely.
And the electrical tape removed:
Next comes the dirtying of the bucket |
