I picked up a set of knees from Capricorn armor. This is how they looked when I opened the box:
First I used the cutting disk on my dremel to trim most of the flash off:
Next I used a combination of the small sanding drum and a set of hobby files to clean up the rest:
A base coat of plastic primer was applied
Then the metallic silver layer went on
It was at this point that I noticed the left knee wasn't right for me. I'm using the MoM Fett as my reference, and the upper dent in that picture above doesn't belong. The dent should be right at the edge, above and to the left of there. I heated the plastic up a bit with a lighter and bent in the dent at the top, then filled the dent with bondo. I didn't take photos of this because, well, it's really not that exciting to see a picture of bondo. After several passes of sanding, priming and re-silvering, I finally got it smooth enough that I was happy with it. From there I sprayed on the lighter yellow. Once that was dry I applied more masking fluid, so that when it's all peeled back I'll get the light yellow around the edges of the scratches. Now you can see the masking fluid. Look at the highlight area of the knee. Right above the light is a bumpy area. That's the masking fluid:
After the light yellow I did the main yellow. This is a pretty crazy yellow, but it all works out ok in the end:
After this yellow, I sprayed a light mist of brown (REALLY light) and then misted with orange. I alternated layers of orange mist and yellow mist until I got the color where I wanted it. Here is where my lack of effort to set up good lighting hurts me - the colors are slightly off in the photos...
Once the paint was dry I broke out my trusty rubber cement eraser and peeled back the 2 layers of masking fluid.
The painting was all done in one night, and all with off the shelf spray paints. I could have airbrushed it with the exact colors, but I enjoy the experimenting. They still need the more subtle weathering, but this was a lot to do in one evening, so that will come soon!
the shoulder in the middle is from my existing armor... i used that as a color reference in the basement. since the lighting down there sucks, i wanted to have something that was a "known good" color to compare to. Now you can see that the orange isn't as crazy as that pic above would have you believe! The paints used here were:
