I went with caboots.com for my shoes. I ordered 1/2 size bigger than what I usually wear, and that was a good idea!

When they arrived, there was a fair bit of excess rubber around the soles. I asked around, and that seems to be uncommon, so I'll just take it as a fluke and move on. I trimmed it out and all was well.

The spikes are cast aluminum, from a run done a while ago on TDH. They screw into the sole with roughly 1 1/4" screws. In addition to those, I put a blob of Goop on the inside of the metal to give it an extra bond. I don't think these are going anywhere. Ever.

The weathering was done with grey and black spray paint.

The spats shown here have not had any weathering done yet.
